The 289 High Performance V-8 is a warmed-up 289 with a hotter solid-lifter camshaft, cylinder heads designed for high rpm, a dual-point ignition engineered for higher revs, cast-iron exhaust headers, and a wider harmonic balancer to deal with increased reciprocating mass down under. The standard 4v 289 was factory rated at 225 hp and the hipo was 271 with torque at 300/310. The HiPo 289 eventually powered the Cobra, Cobra Daytona Coupe, King Cobra, and the GT40 MKl street and race cars. In mid-1964, when Ford introduced their new Mustang, it too was offered with the venerable HiPo 289 option. Ford then reached out to Carroll Shelby to make a race car out of the Mustang.
